The Ultimate Guide to the Best Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products: Advice from a Professional Cleaner
As an eco-friendly professional cleaner, I have always been on the lookout for cleaning products that are not only effective but also gentle on the environment. Over the years, I have tried and tested various eco-friendly cleaning products, and today, I am excited to share with you my top favorites.
Dr. Bronner’s Products
Sal Suds and Castile Soap by Dr. Bronner are my go-to products! These all-natural cleaning products are gentle yet effective, and can be used in a variety of ways around the house. From mopping floors to washing dishes, these two soaps are versatile and eco-friendly.
Bar Keepers Friend
Bar Keepers Friend is a powerful and versatile cleaning product that can tackle tough stains and grime on a wide range of surfaces. Its unique formula combines oxalic acid with a gentle abrasive, providing a deep clean without damaging the surface. Whether you need to remove rust, mineral deposits, hard water stains, soap scum, or tarnish, Bar Keepers Friend can get the job done.
ECOS Laundry Detergent
ECOS laundry detergent is made with all-natural ingredients and is gentle on clothing while being tough on stains. It's also free from synthetic fragrances, dyes, and optical brighteners. Plus, it comes in a variety of scents, including lavender and lemongrass.
Biokleen Bac-Out Stain and Odor Remover
Biokleen Bac-Out Stain and Odor Remover is perfect for pet owners or anyone dealing with tough stains and smells. It's made with plant-based ingredients and is free from harsh chemicals like chlorine and ammonia. Plus, it's safe to use on carpets, upholstery, and even clothing.
Microfiber Cloths
Microfiber cloths are a game-changer when it comes to cleaning. Unlike traditional cotton or paper towels, microfiber cloths are made from a blend of polyester and nylon fibers that are woven together to create an ultra-fine, absorbent fabric. This unique construction allows microfiber cloths to efficiently trap dirt, dust, and bacteria without the need for harsh chemicals or excessive scrubbing. Best part is, they are washable and reusable, making them eco-friendly.
Amber Glass Spray Bottles
When using vinegar and essential oils to clean, it’s important to use a glass bottle instead of plastic. This is because vinegar can react with plastic, causing it to break down and potentially contaminate your cleaning solution and essential oils can eat away at the plastic over time causing it to weaken and break. These glass spray bottles are my absolute favorite!
Essential Oils
Essential oils are an eco-friendly way to add a pleasant scent to your chemical-free cleaning solutions. Lemon, lavender, and eucalyptus are some of my favorites. This is my favorite lemon essential oil and I love this variety pack with a bunch of different scents to try.
Melamine Sponges
If you haven't tried these yet, you're missing out. These little sponges are amazing at removing marks and stains from walls, floors, and even shoes. They're also great for getting rid of scuff marks on baseboards and walls. Often times you don’t need an entire sponge to get rid of trouble areas, so I typically cut them in half and just use what I need.
Mops
Finding a good mop can be a challenge! If you’re in the market for a new mop, here are a couple of my favorites:
Flat Mop - This flat mop is eco-friendly, easy to use, versatile, and best of all the pads can be washed in the washing machine and used again. Personally, I find that flat mops are more effective because they use less water, which means the floor will dry much faster and using the microfiber pads traps dirt and dust better than a traditional mop.
Spin Mop - This spin mop is great for two main reasons. 1 - It has a separate tank for clean and dirty water. That way you are not dipping your mop into dirty water and smearing it all over your floor and 2 - it has washable micro-fiber mop heads. If you couldn’t already tell, I’m a huge fan of microfiber AND being able to wash and reuse items when I can.
